The rain has been teeming down all week, and when it stops the skies never really clear.

I think summer may be officially over. We were even contemplating lighting the fire this week.

So, hello Autumn, what do you have in store for this season?

Gathering firewood and preparing for the winter ahead.

Closed toed shoes and a longer sleeve...

Picnics, boating on the lake...

Bike rides, now it is cooler...

There is still time for eating outdoors...

And there are still flowers from the garden...

We love to use a firepit outside on the cooler evenings and Autumn is the perfect time for this...

and woodfired pizza...

The skies are a changing as we embrace a new season...let's just hope this rain stops.

Old is the new New..

With all the commercial home products on the market these days, people are turning to vintage style decorating. Too many mass produced items have put an end to uniqueness and individualism. We want something else...so we now hunt out vintage or handmade items that hold some value and....uniqueness!!

We can upholster old chairs in unique fabrics and embellishments, use old picture frames to line walls and seek out our own individual style.

We can search for worn, rustic pieces of furniture that may need a bit of paint or sanding to make it our own.

Pillows can be sewn in hessian or stamped or anything you like..to achieve a look all for yourself.

Here an old timber piece is used as a headboard and pallets for a bed...

Collecting bits and bobs of vintage pieces make interesting little collections.

Searching for that individual vintage item holds a lot of appeal. You never know what you are going to find.

Recycled timbers made into new items are a great way to have your own unique piece. I love to do this.

Finding an old chandelier or industrial light fittings make for the vintage look...

Old doors and timber windows add appeal in outdoor settings for uses in gardens. I have placed a mirror in an old door at the end of my garden and it makes the space feel so much bigger.

Collections of old timber picture frames are a great vintage decorating idea, all grouped together, and not necessarily with pictures in them.

Now this may be going a bit far in the 'old is the new, new', but it would be great to do up, don't you think?? Just thought I'd put that out there!

A wall of fairy lights at night...gotta love that...

This ruffly, shower curtain is just so gorgeous....made me smile...

And playing the piano (yet to do) definitely....makes me smile.

Vintage Style Summer Dresses

Hi there! As summer is still going strong here, I thought I'd do a post on one of my favourite things.

Vintage style summer dresses.

In summer time I just about live in these dresses. Cool, light and flowy.

Cotton, florals, spots, stripes, embellishments..

This would be a staple in my wardrobe...so easy to wear and comfortable...

A few favourites of mine are made by the company 'lazybones'. They make such beautiful vintage style dresses of soft cotton and pretty colours. This is one of them 'below'.

Gathered and flowy are my preference for ease and coolness. We have such hot summers, that flowy dresses are a must.

Now, here's a couple out of my wardrobe..(sorry, I can't model them today). This dress is a lazybones dress. I bought it at the start of summer and I wear it a lot. I love the colours, the vintage style and the pom poms on the hem...

And this one I bought so long ago, from a girl who was making them at the Eumundi Markets, near Noosa. I have worn this to death.

And this little spotty number is from (surprise) Target. Who would have thought? Once again bought a long time ago, but still one of my favourites.

And 'above' a handmade vintage crochet bag, I picked up for next to nothing. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Great Ideas to try...

Hi girls and guys, get yourself a cup of coffee or whatever takes your fancy and sit back and check out these ideas you could try at home...

Shell candles..easy to do and used to great efffect....love these!

I thought you could use any tin type of containers here to melt wax into. All different shapes and sizes would be all the more appealing...don't you think?

Now, I have done this with my lavender...cut your lavender and tie up to dry out. After a few weeks, when it is all dried out you pick the flower heads off and save the stems for fire lighters. They make excellent fire starters as the lavender oil ignites quite easily. It also makes the house smell looveelly!!

How about a knitted teacup cozy. Makes a very plain cup seem all the more special.

Sage leaves wrapped around candles. They would smell divine as well as look gorgeous. I have plenty of sage, so I will give this a go.

Old jars or milk bottles for jazzing up a milkshake for the kids or anyone else for that matter. A bit of bakers twine and VOILA..beautiful!!

A vintage cake tin to hold bits and pieces...jewellery, craft items, little keepsakes...great idea!

Vessels for flowers wrapped in vintage book paper or even newspaper. Inexpensive and very effective.

This is such a good idea for an outdoor table. One long icebucket built into the centre of the table. Great idea for entertaining.

Masses of light bulbs...it sure makes an impact...

And make your own jam. Place in lovely glass jars and decorate with string.

A few ideas to ponder with your morning coffee.

The Last of the Summer Roses

My roses seem to be finished for now. As I'm fairly new to growing roses, I'm not sure if anymore are on their way. There are a few scattery ones, but not much else is happening. If you have any knowledge on this, I'd love to know. So I took some shots of the last roses for summer.

Part 2...Exteriors...styles, colours, materials...

Hi! Welcome back. In part one on my ramble about exteriors, we looked at colour and style. We'll now look at materials as well as colour and style. They all go hand in hand.

Cookie cut houses seem to be the thing these days. I absolutely loathe them. There is no individuality or personality about them. Everything is very commercial and mainstream.

Individuality doesn't need to cost the earth. Careful thought and planning will go a long way.

Timber clad homes are a true classic. They have a softer finish to a brick home, can be painted any fabulous colour and can be updated easily with another coat of paint in years to come. Paired with timber windows and some decorative features, you'll have a timeless home.

Of course, good lines, the right pitch, perfect proportions are all considerations to achieve this look. If a home is unbalanced on the outside, in my humble opinion, it just looks wrong. Good architecture certainly goes a long way.

Window sizes also play an important part in the exterior of a home. Too small, on a long length of wall can look uneven. Not centred, can also look wrong. Proportion and balance is key.

I also love rendered brick homes and homes of old worn bricks. Large steel windows look great as well as the timber variety. I prefer neutral colours on rendered homes as I find bolder colours seem to look garish.

Old stone homes are a work of art. So much love and attention has gone into these homes. With a good design they will surely stand the test of time.

I love the use of this colour on a timber clad home. A bold colour like this works well when teamed with white. My husband and I did a home with this colour scheme and I loved it. Click here if you would like to have a look.

A litte more individual, is the use of recycled or worn materials for the exterior of your home. It will be different and interesting and appealing if used in the right way.

I love the grey washy render on this home (above). With the white timber windows this to me is perfection for a rendered brick home. LOVE it!!

Outdoor accessorising is the way to go to add interest and dimension outside. If you are stuck with what you have, and you want a lift, this is the way to go. It needn't cost much. Vintage pieces, garden accessories, planting, garden urns, birdcages. You just have to use your imagination and search out ideas and pictures to inspire you.

Rustic style garden rooms or converted barns make great homes. Imagination and determination can make any place a home (without going down the cookie cutter path).

Homes like these, have used exterior materials wisely and have created fabulous homes for us to look at. As lovely as they are, they are often out of most peoples' budget. I use pictures like this and all the others for that matter as inspiration. You look at these and you may take away one idea to use as your own or it may create a whole other idea in your head of what you want to achieve.

It may be the shape of the windows, the exterior colour or it may just be the pot plant at the front door. It is all inspiration and can be fuel for thought when considering building your own home. It may be a shed or a lavish home you are building, but whatever it is, your own individual stamp will make a far better impact than the cookie cut housing varieties we are seeing everywhere nowadays. Exteriors - styles, colours, materials...Part 1

Hi Everyone! This is part one on my topic of exteriors, what I think works, what materials will stand the test of time, what colours work best and what styles I love.

This is all written in my humble opinion. You may agree, you may not. You may like, you may not. Anyway it's all fun, and I love me some good exteriors...so I am starting with the colour white (surprise, surprise). I am talking about classic STYLE homes here and not the latest, designery, newest material, high tech style homes. Sorry, if that's what you're after you better look away now.

I have always thought white to be THE classic colour in exteriors. The reason I pick white ( and I do like other colours as well, more on that later) is because it will go the distance, it will outlast any fashion fads, it will always be clean and classic and it holds an appeal that far outways others.

Now for white to really work on the exterior, I think the colour needs to be incorporated throughout the whole exterior, meaning windows, trims, architraves etc, with maybe the exception of the front door and roof (only if you want to). Using slightly different shades of white works as well. I think by not mixing colours with white really makes for a classic home.

When I am talking white exteriors, I mainly mean timber clad exteriors, or rough brick painted exteriors. I do not mean white rendered brick as I find that just looks wrong, unless you have a typical mediterranean style home that follows this style throughout.

Decorative elements on the exterior work well using a contrasting colour. Decorative, as in shutters, awnings etc. A contrasting colour on these fixtures help to highlight features of the home and to add interest.

I am a huge fan of timber windows. They are a classic and are outstanding. In an all white home, timber windows will supersede any aluminium window. If budget only allows aluminium, seek to get the best looking ones available.

White cladding in either horizontal or vertical will win out in the classic stakes. Batten on board is also a stunning style that will never date.

If you are looking for a classic style home, something that won't date, consider white.

Even the garden looks great against a white backdrop.

Other materials that work well with white are stone, wood, concrete. ( this is the case on the interior as well)

White will prevail in these instances. Other colours are also stunning and used in the right style, with the right materials any home can be a knockout. Check in for what I have next. Book Love..part 2

Hi there! I've done a post on books before. Look here if you are interested. I really love old books. I love the vintage hardback covers, a little tattered, a little worn...

I also love libraries to store them. Big, oversized cupboards with glass doors would work perfectly.

I especially like to collect vintage childrens books. Stacked up in childrens bedrooms they recall times when life was carefree. Simple stories of adventures with basic illustrations.

They make a great decorator item.

Vintage cookbooks for lining up in the kitchen, make a great display.

And how's this for your own d.i.y. library. Love this idea. It would work especially well in a kids room for easy access to all their books.

Crumpled pages for crafting...so many uses for the humble book...

And some treasured books make great collectors' items as well.

Paper flowers...with book paper. If you are feeling a bit crafty, you can see how I made some easy paper flowers here.

The Allure of Lace

Lace and doily type patterns for clothing and the home have made quite a comeback of late.

My mother shudders when I talk doilies or crochet. It reminds her of the seventies.. True, there are some ugly designs out there and you have to be careful how you pull it off.

Using it in small doses can be very pretty and appealing for both the home and body.

A simple lace curtain can be very beautiful in the right set up.

The intricate work in some of these designs are amazing. The embroidery and fine detailing are so delicate.

A simple edging on beautiful crushed linen transforms this otherwise plain bedspread.

I'm loving these doilies placed in jars for candle lanterns.

Stacks of linens and lace.

I have been wanting to do a project with lace for a while and think this cushion above with the lace edging may be the easiest way to start.

What is with this? I just love pictures of these beautiful materials. My mind forms all sorts of ideas as to what to do with it.

Remember there are some yucky lace items out there, made from nylon etc. (not a good look). You have to be very careful when choosing lace and crochet. A lot of them can look cheap and nasty.

This little made up tent is a gorgeous example of crochet and lace used in a more modern way.

If you're looking for a project like me, another easy one would be a little edging on a table runner. Not over the top, not busy, just a little delicate difference to a plain runner.

I love how old lace table cloths or bedspreads can be used for curtains. I also like tacking a few together of different patterns to drape casually over windows. Another way to update them is to dye them a colour. Soft colours work well.

How is this, doily light fitting. So easy to do. I'm pretty sure you use a PVA glue to smother the doilies and stick them onto the balloon. (if that's not right and anyone knows, please let me know). When all is dry, just pop balloon and VOILA!!

And you know, you can always make doily patterned cookies. So many uses for doilies. Oh, and did you see the curtain in the first picture, made up of different doilies and lace panels all sewn together. Brilliant! I love this idea. What are your thoughts??

Grow your own!

My garden has produced quite a lot this year, and I am so happy about it. A couple of years ago we decided to create our own vegie patch and it's been the best thing.

Some things have worked and some haven't. It's all trial and error, but for the most part its' been very rewarding. I love to go and pick fresh herbs for salads and cooking.

What we don't have we sometimes swap with friends and family for what they have. Everyone seems to have a surplus of one thing or another. We've had eggs, apples, lemons and herbs from others.

You get so much satisfaction from growing your own, be it food or flowers. We catch fish, dive for lobsters and abalone and sometimes swap these for other goodies.

Growing flowers for picking and bringing inside is just a little thing to do, but feels so good knowing you grew them yourself.

If you haven't got a veggie or flower patch, I suggest trying one. You don't need a lot of space, there is a lot of stuff you can grow in pots. The rewards will be soooooo worth it and it makes you feel good. Now that can't be a bad thing.

Blueberry Bliss...

Hi there! Remember when I mentioned we went to the Blueberry Farm. Well, with all those beautiful

blueberries, I had to share this recipe with you.

Picking you own berries is so much fun. This blueberry farm was in the middle of nowhere on a dusty road that went for miles. It was stinking hot and we thought we'd never get there. Eventually, when we did arrive, there were blueberry bushes everywhere. We grabbed our buckets and started picking.

So with all of these blueberries, I had to look for recipes to use them up. Besides putting them in smoothies ( which is delicious), I found this recipe for a blueberry slice.

It's from the Marie Claire Fresh and Easy cookbook. It was definitely easy and tasted divine.

I had frozen my blueberries and you don't defrost them to cook with.

This is so goooooood!! Believe me, you will love it.

Serve with ice-cream if you want to eat it as a dessert. (Warning - very moorish).

So, here's the recipe if you want to give it a try...

There you have it. Delicious blueberry slice. You can't go wrong with this one!!

My Happiness List

A lot of bloggers have written about the things they are grateful for in their everyday life. They take a photo each day of something that makes them happy and grateful. I love this idea and have decided to do a similar thing. For me, it's about finding pleasure in the little things. Just a moment in time that makes me happy. So my happiness list this week goes something like this...

Going to the beach in the morning and finding we have the whole beach to ourselves. Bliss.

Hydrangeas I have picked from the garden. These make me happy!!

Enjoying a day out with the family to a local blueberry farm and finding a bull laying in the middle of the road. We calmly drove around him as he wouldn't move. We picked lots of blueberries and had a great family day out.

Watching my son surf for the first time and to stand up on his second wave.

Riding my new bike and enjoying every minute.

Eating fresh salads on these hot summery nights.

I am grateful for these pleasures this week. Very simple, I know, but that's what makes me happy. You know, I'm a no-fuss simple kinda girl.

The Ranch

This place is a health retreat in Malibu in the United States.

I am drooling over the simple decor and spacious surrounds. The fireplace with wood stacked as a stunning feature of the room. I love how the structure of the building is the key component of the style.

The outdoor areas are also streamlined and clutter free.

Unadorned windows and statement lighting make for a casual elegant feel...

My favourite feature (which got my attention in the first place) would be the wide plank style timber flooring. The pale grey wash with the exposed nails and slight gaps are just stunning. I think it creates a tranquil, relaxed feel to the space. LOVE it!!

The pool area is also understated but incredibly stunning in it's simple, no fuss style. The stone wall and timber decking compliment each other perfectly.

I have always loved this shot. I have shown it before. Simple and classic with that gorgeous pendant light. You know how much I love the simple things!!! What about you?

Thursdays at my Table....in the garden

Hi there! Todays' tablescape is a garden work table.

A table for cutting, tying, preparing...

organizing and sorting veggies and herbs...

I used a hessian table runner, watering cans, rusty old candleholder, string, garden pickings, glass cloches etc. Any garden paraphenalia looks great.

A garden work setting wouldn't be complete without the gumboots and hat...

I love to take a basket and go out and pick fresh produce from the garden, it is such a rewarding thing to do. The smell of the cuttings is divine...

Did you see that old style radio there? It's my new purchase and I am loving it. I love the vintage look and you can take it anywhere...to the beach, picnics...(it's a bush radio, in case you were wondering).

A garden working table, that is useful as well as beautiful. Maybe you could try one!

So that's this weeks table. Do you like? Yes....no...

Bathing Outside

These outdoor bathing areas are so enticing. As it's been quite hot here, I can only imagine how great these showers could be, not just because showering outside would be pretty good, but because of their design and style.

This is quite a simple set up and only requires the hose.

White slatted enclosures, stone, metal, or out in the elements. They all hold a certain appeal.

So much fun for the kids. I love this one!!

Well this one and the next may be indoor showers, but (they could be outdoor enclosed ones,) are some of my favourites, so I threw them in as well.

I love a big space in a shower, so if you have a small shower at home maybe an outdoor one is the go. Creating one of these would be so much fun and not too difficult. How lavish or simple you went would be up to you. So many great styles and inspiration. Great for the summer months, and hot water could easily be connected. I think I've talked myself into it. What do you think??

New Year, New Ideas

Do you make new year resolutions? I try not to, as it is too much pressure to try and stick to them and what does it matter anyway? Every day's a new day. Having said that, I do think up little goals that I would like achieve, but with no pressure attached. Just thoughts, that come and go, new ideas, new projects that pop into my mind....(we'll see how that goes)...

A new year always makes me want to plan ahead a little bit, to look forward to good times and to make some changes and keep some things the same..

to eat more fresh food

spend time with my little family

time to read, decorate, plan...be in the moment

move on to a new project...

smell the flowers, grow the flowers, decorate with flowers..(gotta love those flowers)

grow my garden

wear what I love...

Enjoying the simple pleasures of life, living the life I want to lead, being the person I want to be

In Summer Mode

Hi there! Glad to be back. Did you all have a lovely christmas? I sure did. In a way I am glad it is over and all the decorations can be packed away and we can get on with some summer living...

We have been hitting the beach and the lake this week..there is a new kayak in the family and it is getting a workout, especially with the boys.

I, on the other hand don't mind sitting back on the sand with a good book and going for a quick dip whenever I feel like it...

I do sooo love summer, the clear blue skies, slight nor'easter wind, sun shining...

if we are not at the beach we are kicking back at home by the pool, lazing around and thinking about what to cook on the barbie at night...

There is nothing better than laying on the couch on a hot summers afternoon and reading a magazine or book. The book below, I received for Christmas and it has lovely coastal images of beachy homes and a carefree lifestyle...(easy afternoon reading pleasure).

My son's pippy haul..he was very excited about this and we'll be cooking them up tonight...

Along with summer comes all the fresh produce from the garden. We have an abundance of tomatoes at the moment, so they will be on the menu tonight with the pippies and the fish.

Coastal living...sure is pretttty goood!!!

So lately, I'll be by the pool or at the beach, soaking up the summer mood and relishing this great time of the year. What will you be doing? Talk soon!

An Aussie Christmas, be it by the beach or in the bush, it is mostly celebrated outdoors. Tables set up outside or on long verandahs. Warm sunshine, barbeques and swimming. Casual clothes, happy little bronzed kids and holidays to remember. Christmas in Australia...what could be better? (maybe a white christmas). With only a week to go, some are only beginning to decorate their homes for christmas...

I saw a friend in town today and she had only just begun on her christmas decorating, shopping etc. She said how she always waits till the last week as she isn't in the mood before then.

I still have a bit to go as I always seem to come up with another idea...there is a lot of inspiration out there this year..

Cushion Couture, Apartment Therapy, and Christmas...

Hi there! I have been busy trying to get everything organized for Christmas and to do a bit of crafting. I am slowly running out of time (for the crafting that is). Anyway, I received an email last week from Jo Mc Comisky of Beautiful South blog, asking me to enter her competition to win a set of beautiful cushions. The brief was to style a cluster of cushions, be it 3 or 33 in a creative and stylish setting. So this is my entry. I couldn't decide on which picture to enter, but ended up going with the picture above. You also had to name your cushion cluster...so cushion couture was the name I chose. Competition ends tomorrow. So I have my fingers crossed.

On another note, I was very excited to see my Christmas table setting featured on Apartment Therapy blog for calm holiday table settings.

Thursdays at my Table...naturally red and green

Hi Everyone! Todays' table is all festive in red and green. Firstly I laid a natural linen tablecloth with red striped linen runners.

Down the centre, went some branches found outside and I just criss- crossed them through each other and mixed a red berry garland in as well...

I used mint out of the garden and placed it in amongst the branches. It is a beautiful green for Christmas. Sprigs of rosemary were used with the cutlery and vintage cotton napkins and a red french stripe ribbon tied it all together.

Tea-lights are so inexpensive and used enmasse create a whimsical atmosphere. I placed these in and around the branches and on vintage spoons.

The paper pom poms from last week were put to good use as a dressing for the backs of the chairs...

I covered oversized chunky candles with christmas carol music paper and also hung some small stars on the branches. These clay stars are made by Ness and can be found at Marley and Lockyer's etsy shop.

It seems a bit of a bird theme has evolved so a few nests, feathers and eggs were placed amongst the branches.

A few extra bottles of mint filled the gaps...

The tree is up, it needs a few more decorations, but it is looking quite good...

I have tried to use what I have this year without any new additions (this could change however).

I have used my lovely old ladder to decorate with, and I will add bits and pieces as I go...

I have hung a wreath made of branches sideways above the dining table and decorated it with olive leaves, feathers, birds and fairy lights. The three hanging weaved balls with pinecones in the centre are handmade in belgium. I bought them a couple of years back and they remind me of birds nests for some reason...

A bit of greenery here and there and I am on my way in the Christmas decorating stakes...

Simple Rustic Christmas Inspiration

Christmas is approaching quickly and I love to look at inspiration in all sorts of styles and forms.

I love simple as much as I love over the top for Christmas. Simple works well and is very streamlined and clean, but if you like to play around with styling as I do, over the top can be really fun to do.

BUT, today it is all about the simple look that is oohh sooo beautiful!!

Handmade Christmas crafts, food and decorating is the way to go for me..

So I am loving this rustic farmhouse style christmas. Oh so very simple and serene.

I'll be using this idea with the garden steps. So effective and beautiful.

If only I could crochet, I love this little snowflake.

Olive branches wrapped around a chair... I could do that!!

Simple homemade ideas, that hold so much more value than any store bought decoration..

The potted olive tree for christmas is a great idea especially if short on space. It is very effective here with very minimal ornamentation.

Presents housed in vintage tins is another great idea for gift giving. And tied with old lace is a favourite with me this year.

Thursdays at my Table...a paper Christmas

Hello!

Welcome to 'thursdays at my table'. Today I have done a Christmas table using mostly paper items to style with...

If you want an easy table setting that is kind on the wallet, a bit quirky and a little bit interesting, than this is it...

Firstly, I laid the table runner down the centre of the table, which is just a roll of brown kraft paper, cut to fit...

I used paper doilies for placemats and stuck foam letters in one corner of each, spelling out Christmas words...

I used these handmade french paper envelopes which I bought on etsy and folded musical paper napkins inside...

To hang above the table, I made these paper pom poms out of white tissue paper and old dress making patterns, and hung them in a cluster over the centre of the table...

Some olive branches, star jasmine and little vases of fresh rosemary were spread out down the centre with paper mache reindeers added for effect and chunky lit candles....

A blackboard on a vintage ladder holds up the drinks menu...

Above, are blocks of belgium chocolate wrapped in old music paper and tied with string...these are a great little hostess gift...

I placed bunches of chalk in mercury glass votives for anyone to write on the paper runner. (keeps kids entertained)...

A few inexpensive little bells placed here and there and VOILA...a completed, simple, paper christmas table setting. What do you think?

Sink it In!

I don't know what it is, but I have a thing for sinks, not the commercial, run of the mill type of sinks, but the unique, slightly rustic, slightly quirky type of sinks...

I have blogged about them before, but new ones keep showing up and I have quite a collection going...

I'm thinking this is my favourite. I love the worn metal and unusual shape.

Then again stone or concrete ones get me every time.

I'm loving the benchtop here more than the actual sinks, just thought I'd throw that in..

Enamel sinks are gorgeous also...

This last one is so appealing in style, yet practically, I think I would need a deeper one for the kitchen. In the bathroom though, it is a whole other story. I would love it in there. Sooooo many sinks to chose from, it's just finding a unique one. I think I may need a new house for my new obsession. What do you think of the sinks??

Thursdays at My Table...island style

Hi everyone, welcome to 'thursdays at my table'. This is the day where I get to show different table settings or tablescapes that I have created.

I have gone with a bit of an island style sideboard tablescape. This sideboard is near the entry to my home and I have decorated it with a bit of a holiday feel for the start of summer.

By using shells, vintage books and rustic pieces this look is easy to achieve.

I love old style world globes and old book paper. Some straw hats, starfish and a rustic sideboard.

Shell boxes are easy to make. I made this one years ago and even though it's a bit rough around the edges, I'll still keep it. ( it did take quite a few hours to glue each individual shell on).

The large picture with the bright and worn colours really help to style this look.

So that's it, a thursday...at my table...summery sideboard tablescape.

Summer Gardening and Hydrangea Love...

Hello!

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been tidying up the garden at home, getting it ready for summer...

We have a lot of hedges and they were all in need of a major clipping. This is a big job with a lot to clean up...but oh so worth it...

The star jasmine is out in full force and is absolutely stunning and smells divine...

We have had so much summer rain lately so everything is totally flourishing. It doesn't take much for things to get out of control and the lawn to take off...

I love to see everything green and the vegie patch starting to produce the summer crop...

My latest obsession is hydrangeas. I love their big flowery heads of beauty in all their colours. I have only planted white ones, but this bush last year produced pink flowers..very beautiful...

So I have potted up a few more for this section of the garden where pipes run underneath and nothing could be planted here.

I love how only one flower can fill a whole vase. And if you have limited flowers in your garden for picking these babies are the go..

Hydrangea heaven! Quite an old fashioned flower but oh so very beautiful!!!

A Toasty Christmas

Christmas time has snuck up, oh so fast and I am starting to think about decorating and crafting. I have collected bits of inspiration from all over and will start to work out my theme for this year. Anyway some styled Christmas inspiration today. This mantlepiece grabbed my attention..I would so love a mantel to decorate, especially at Christmas time. This one is particularly luv...ely.

I would like to try this curtain of fairy lights. What an impact it makes. You could just string rows of them all down a blank wall.

Simple to do...could use this idea...

Ultra easy, this one, simple is often the best..don't you think?

A warm and toasty styled Christmas for all you gals on the other side of the world. It would be lovely to have a cozy, snug Christmas one year, all inside with fires ablazing. We on the other hand will have a stinking hot christmas, with barbeques, seafood, beach activities and plenty of blowies (for those of you who don't know what they are, they are small black flies, that buzz around and try to land on your food.) Aah... the joys of summer and Christmas in Australia. Can't wait!! See ya.

I'm Back!

Well, hello there! Firstly, thank-you to everyone for your lovely comments and emails, I truly appreciate it.

I have been off trying to get my head around a few things and still have a while to go, but anyway life goes on and I am happy to be back blogging.

Finding the time to blog in amongst family life can sometimes be difficult, but I do love it and I love reading everyone elses blogs. How do you girls do it? How much time do you spend on your blogs?

Sometimes I feel the pressure to blog and wonder if it is worth it, but I have decided that I do love it and need to do it when it suits me. It gives me a creative outlet and I need that.

Anyway, moving on....

I read these words the other day and found them to be real and to put things into perspective.

Lovely words, don't you think?

Also, since I put pressure on myself to do 'Thursday tablescapes', I have decided they will come on most thursdays, but maybe not every thursday. Sorry about that. It depends on how much time I get to devote to it. This is all apart of prioritising my life. I hope you understand.

Thursdays At My Table

Hi there! I thought I might start showing different table settings that I've done. Every Thursday I will try and show a new one. I love to do tablesettings and tablescapes, so this will be my day that I can play about with different ideas and show you what I've come up with. I hope I may be able to inspire you too.

My Pierre de Ronsard roses are absolutely blooming at the moment. I have an abundance of them. This is the first time ever, I can't believe it. I have that many roses, I can put them everywhere in the house.

I was running out of vases, so I use any jars I can find. I actually prefer them in old jars and jugs rather than traditional vases.

So this table setting was born. A row of roses in different vessels down the centre of the table, was the main starting point.

This setting would be for a morning or afternoon tea. Just cups and plates and napkins and little candle votives.

These are a an old french childhood game. I love these boxes and they add a bit of interest to the table.

I found these vintage cotton napkins at a second-hand store and I love them. They are a set of 10. I washed them up and love them not ironed and all crinkly. They have a little delicate crochet around the edge. I think they can look very french and are of a tea-stained colour.

This table setting is very easy to do when you have a lot of flowers. They are the real showpiece.

I even scattered extra petals all over the table and I love that.

So this is my first table setting for 'thursdays at my table'.

When the table setting is all packed away the flowers look beautiful on their own. I sooooo love these flowers. Remember when I only had a couple of them, (I know, you're thinking geez, there just flowers) but I have never had success with them until now. So a bit over excited. Anyway....

Shutter Love & How I use them at Home

I have always loved shutters. It started with the tropical holiday look a few years back when plantation shutters were everywhere. They do evoke a holiday feel, sort of resort like and relaxing. That must be why I am in love with them.

I love them for the look they give on exteriors as well as on the interior. Depending on the home, rustic worn ones work well on an older style home of weathered appearance. I'm thinking beach shack, fishermans cottage or a country french style home of stone and large timber windows. The newer streamlined ones, suit the more classic, timeless home. Anyway, I do love all of them.

Let's move inside shall we...besides shutters being used for window dressings on the interior, I like them as backdrops for decorating. The more worn and rustic works well here. Old screens work well for this look as well.

They look great propped up on the wall (above) as a decorator piece that creates visual interest.

I love how these old ones are used as a backdrop for the bed. I love how they are a bit ricketty and not perfect.

Old doors work well as backdrops too. Especially if they have nice detail, flaky paint, patterned timber, old hinges. All these make for an interesting backdrop and can add a lovely architectural feel to a room. Plain walls can be instantly transformed.

On the exteriors (above). My husband made these ones, they are timber, quite streamlined and painted glossy white.

This is my shutter cupboard (above). You have probably seen it before in other shots I've posted of my home. I love it's rustic, rough look. It used to be a dull browny colour and I painted it white and scrubbed it back. You can see the stain leaking through at the bottom, but I like it like this. Perfectly imperfect.

These black shutters were the prototype for the shutters on the exterior of the house. I thought the blades were too thin and wanted wider blades for the outside. So these little beauties came inside and were hung in this spot on the wall. They were only meant to be there temporarily for a photo shoot for a magazine, but somehow they've managed to stay there. I have written on them with chalk for added interest.

I put this rustic screen behind my bed last week to test it out. I quite like it, even though it may look a little small for the bed. Anyway it is staying there for now...

This is another screen I had, which is usually behind a chair in my room folded up, so I tried it behind the bed as well. I think it looked pretty good, but it was not the look I was going for, so out it came and the other one went back.

In the Weekend Mood

The weekend has rolled around again and we have had some lovely warm weather and hopefully more on the way. This weekend will be spent at home mowing the lawn, picking flowers, cooking, maybe swimming if this heat keeps up and generally relaxing at home. What are your plans?

High Above Sea Level

Hi everyone! Today I thought I would show you a home that my husband built for some clients. It is quite contemporary and very high up a mountain. The structure is a mixture of corrugated iron, timber, brick and stone...somehow it all works together.

It consists of two buildings with a link in the middle. This home has views right down the coast line and out to sea...

Polished concrete and timber flooring throughout. This is the dining room and kitchen area.

A minimalistic decor is evident as the view is so spectacular, it is all that is needed...

This next pic is my favourite room in the house. It is the walk way that links the two buildings together. It has large sandstone on the floor with white timber cladding and floor to ceiling glass doors looking out to the magnificent view.

These clients are museum designers and they work from home, so the second wing is their office space...

This back enclosed courtyard is protected from the strong winds that come with being so high up this mountain. It is also a lovely little sun trap. The row of water tanks is visually appealing as it is practical. Quite contemporary in design but also well suited to this environment. What do you think?

Palm Beach and Carribbean Charisma

Hello there! I have just been away for the weekend to the gorgeous Palm Beach on the Northern side of Sydney. This is a seriously lovely place in the world.

The beaches are beautiful, as are the houses and scenery. It is also a very expensive part of Sydney. It is lovely to visit, but to live here, houses are up in the millions of dollars. Definitely not in my budget.

There is very much a beachy vibe in this area, from the cafes, housing and homeware stores. It reminds me more of the old world beach style which I love, of timber clad homes, timber windows, lots of light and lots of white. Old cottages done up to resemble their former glory.

And cafes with a laid-back classic style... this one is called the boathouse and it is literally in a boathouse..

Great food in an unpretencious atmosphere.

All of this beachy vibe got me thinking about coastal style and how I love the Carribbean beachy look...

As far as beach house style goes, the carribbean look is the one I prefer the most. Think India Hicks, Bahamas, lots of white, accents of black, shutters, shells, coral etc..

As summer is approaching in this part of the world, I think I might need to tweak a few things at home and make for a summery vibe..

I am going to introduce some black and white ticking stripe and plenty of straw hats for decoration

My Garden with some Coastal Decorating

Hi Everyone! Hope you are having a wonderful day. I have taken some pictures of my garden, that is starting to flourish, as we have had so much rain.

The lavender at the moment is beautiful and there is so much of it.

I am still only getting a few roses every now and then. I still pick them though (as sparse as they are) and I have been doing a bit of styling with them inside. Come on in...

My three little roses in their little bottles, look lovely all the same in my bedroom...

I quite like single stems in jars or bottles as much as I like a big bunch...

The roses pick up the colour of my pink camisole hanging up...

This picture (above) is one that I pulled out of an old frame that I really loved in a vintage store. I had no intention of keeping the picture, just the lovely frame that it was in. I was going to throw it out, but I kept looking at it, and looking at it, and then realized I really quite liked it. I like the colours and the vintagey rough around the edges look. I have added a bottle of pink shells here, that I have had for ages and the roses (loving this mix).

I have lots of shells, tonnes of them. I had collected them for years, I even gave a lot away. You can always decorate with a shell. I had gone off them for a while, but I am glad I never got rid of them all because I do love them and living on the coast, it brings a nice feel to the home.

So here my roses sit quite well with shells and boats in a coastal theme. I like to mix it up like this. Years back it was all very tropical flowers with a coastal style and I think I tired of seeing it everywhere. I like that things have changed and different styles can work well together.

I like a country style with a coastal feel. I live in a small country town, but only 4 kilometres from the beach, so the coast is very much apart of our lives. I think we have the best of both worlds.

The White Way

The sun is shining, sky bright and light, so a bit of white decor is on my mind...

An all white kitchen is a favourite. They always look classic. Love this one with the soaring ceiling and large lighting.

I have always loved ceilings like this, with the exposed trusses and all painted white. I think it's the airy, spacious feel. It adds some interesting structure, so decorating can be kept to a minimum.

White lining boards are another favourite. I have these in my home and I love them. They make my home feel light and coastal.

As the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, the washing can be done (woohoo). I love it when the lawn is freshly mown and the all-whites washing is hanging on the line. Bliss! (aah, you can tell the simple things in life make me happy). Have a great day!!

Rustic Beauty

As I am looking around my home this afternoon, shuffling a bit of this and a bit of that, reworking little tablescapes, some things were not quite working out and I thought to myself, there are quite a few looks and styles that I like and I need to marry them altogether, because these are the things that I love.

I have a bit of old, a bit of new, a bit of sentimental stuff and I want it all to work. To live happily together...

So instead of becoming frustrated, I am going to make it work somehow. Moving things around and creating my own look. That's what it is...individual style...that is what makes a home, isn't it?

It's not always easy to make this work, but with some thinking and leaving it and going back to it, it somehow falls into place.

I do love to move things around at home and I usually do this when I am adding something new, which I have done today. When you add something else to the mix, it can make other things not look quite right, so it takes a bit of time to rework the space. Other times things work perfectly straight away and that is a bonus.

I have never strayed to far from rustic beauty. I love worn, old, frayed. But I like to throw in a bit of soft industrial, elegant and classic to the mix.

Not to much of any one thing, as it can be overkill, but my key style pretty much stays the same with a few tweaks every now and again.

I find this kind of rustic beauty very individual, as thought has been put into style and purchases without being influenced by mass produced looks. This is creating your own look which shows individualism and personality. What styles do you prefer?

Atelier Movie and Pics

Hi everyone! We had a successful open day on Saturday for 'my home atelier'.

We had some beautiful flowers which I had to photograph to show you. Pale pink roses and sweetpeas. They smelt divine.

I have made a very amateur quick little movie of the set up for the day, that I thought I would share with you all.

The rain held off, which I was very grateful for as we have had some wild weather in the past week.

And now it is back to pouring down with rain, so I was very lucky for the one sunny day.

Lots of cake and cookies were sold, (always a hit) and we had a good day all round.
